DETAILS and APPLICATION INFORMATION for the Sperling Scholarships
THE THANKS TO SCANDINAVIA SPERLING FELLOWSHIPS
IN MEMORY OF FRANCES AND BENJAMIN SPERLING
AT THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY OF JERUSALEM 2007/2008
The Thanks To Scandinavia Fund from the Benjamin Sperling Bequest to the Hebrew University has endowed two annual scholarships of $14,000 each, in memory of Frances and Benjamin Sperling, for students from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, in order to pursue graduate studies at the Hebrew University.
Candidates for the Scholarship should have a B.A. degree or equivalent and wish to spend a year of study within the framework of the Rothberg International School's Division of Graduate Studies for students from overseas.
The RIS Division of Graduate Studies, established in 1993, functions under the auspices of the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare, and the Rothberg International School. The Division offers degree and non-degree options, with seminars and tutorials in Jewish Studies, Jewish Education, Politics and Society of Israel, Islam and the Middle East, Biblical Studies, Comparative Religion and Community Leadership and Philanthropy Studies. Modern Hebrew language instruction is available at all levels, as are courses in Biblical Hebrew, Arabic, Yiddish, Greek, Akkadian, and German. Courses and tutorials in the Division are taught in English by members of the Hebrew University faculty and distinguished visitors; these courses are recognized by the Hebrew University as equivalent to courses offered in its departmental degree programs. In addition, students with a sufficient command of Hebrew are encouraged to take graduate courses taught in Hebrew in the faculties and schools of Hebrew University.
The Graduate Year Program is designed to meet the special needs of qualified graduate students from abroad who wish to spend a year at the Hebrew University, whether they are M.A. or Ph.D. candidates or recent college graduates who have not yet commenced a program of gradu¬ate study. While this is not a degree program, a full transcript is provided in order to facilitate the transfer of credit.
Admission to the Division of Graduate Studies is based on transcripts, letters of recommenda¬tion and a statement of purpose. Students must have the equivalent of a "B" (3.2) grade average. Application forms and supporting documents should reach the office of the RIS Division of Graduate Studies no later than March 15, 2007.
Application forms can be downloaded directly from http://overseas.huji.ac.il/gradu_apply.pdf
The Thanks To Scandinavia Fellowships in Memory of Frances and Benjamin Sperling are competitive and will be awarded on an equal-opportunity basis. Academic excellence and the relevance of the candidate's studies to the needs of Scandinavia will be the main criteria for the selection. The opportunities offered by the Hebrew University in the candidate's field of interest will also be considered. Recipients will not be eligible for any additional Israel-based financial aid.
To be eligible, candidates must prove citizenship in one of the Scandinavian countries. Students from Scandinavia who have been in Israel for no more than one calendar year at the time of application may also submit their applications to the Rothberg International School and to the appropriate Scandinavian organization for screening.
When possible, each of the two scholarship recipients will come from a different Scandinavian country. In every case, the scholarship will be for a single year and non-renewable.
The non-refundable US $60. application fee will be paid to the Rothberg International School by the student when submitting the application form.
The full scholarship covers the cost of participation in the Intensive Hebrew language course, the Summer Ulpan, which precedes the academic year (US $1,300), Summer Ulpan health insurance (US $90), tuition for the academic year at the Rothberg International School (US $9,100), and housing for the Summer Ulpan period (US $700) and the Academic year (US $3,115). Students choosing to live off-campus will receive this sum to cover part of their housing costs.

Their recommendations will be forwarded to the Provost of the Rothberg International School. The final decision on the annual scholarship recipients will be made in Jerusalem, by the Selection Committee, chaired by the Provost of the RIS.
Copies of the recommendations for the Scandinavian applicants and all relevant correspondence, as well as the protocol of the Committee's decision on the awards, will be sent to The Executive Director, Thanks To Scandinavia Fund in New York.
Note: Since the number of highly qualified applicants generally exceeds the number of awards, candidates are encouraged to simultaneously seek other sources of support for studying at the Hebrew University.
