Thanks To Scandinavia Co-Founder Celebrates Milestone Birthday

NEW YORK, September 16, 2008… Richard Netter, President and Co-Founder of Thanks to Scandinavia and Principal at Singer, Netter, Dowd and Berman, turned 90 today.

A prominent New York attorney, Richard Netter founded Thanks to Scandinavia 45 years ago, along with the late Danish pianist and entertainer Victor Borge. Victor Borge, who passed away on December 23, 2000, would have been 100 years old next January – a series of events recognizing this anniversary are being planned.

During a trip to Germany in 1956, Richard Netter first heard stories of rescue. Active in his fraternity, he soon founded Thanks To The Danes, which in 1963 became Thanks To Scandinavia. Through the organization, he has touched the lives of thousands of individuals from Scandinavia, and helped an important chapter in World War II history gain national and international prominence. Talking about its work, Richard Netter says: “These are days when it is important, even vital, that we express ourselves about the good deeds as well as the bad ones.”

Thanks To Scandinavia is a scholarship fund which honors the unique roles of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden – and most recently Bulgaria – in rescuing Jews during the Second World War. The educational organization awards annually scholarships totaling $519,500 to Scandinavian students, teachers, journalists and other opinion makers for study and study trips at universities and medical centers in the United States as well as in Israel and Scandinavia.

With important original research and publications as well as programming, Thanks To Scandinavia has been instrumental giving public visibility to the inspiring story of how Scandinavians protected thousands of their Jewish neighbors during the Holocaust years.

Thanks To Scandinavia’s work is driven by continued gratitude to and recognition of those few who participated in the courageous rescue of Jews during World War II. Its mission is to build bridges of friendship among Scandinavians, Americans, and Jews worldwide that resonate with this history but are vibrant today and into the future.
