Thanks To Scandinavia Celebrates the Danish Spirit of Independence at the Rebild July 4th Festival
Against a backdrop of increasing transatlantic tensions, 15,000 Danes and Danish Americans gathered on July 4th in the hills of Rebild (NW Denmark) to celebrate American Independence Day and to listen to prominent American and Danish speakers and entertainers. This year’s celebration focused not only on longstanding Danish-American ties, but by centrally including Jewish-Americans in the Festival, also reasserting the strength of Danish-American-Jewish connections.
Congressman Tom Lantos and Thanks To Scandinavia Executive Director Rebecca Neuwirth were the American speakers. In addition, a statue of the famous Danish-American and Jewish entertainer, Victor Borge, was placed at Rebild by his daughter Rikki Borge.
The strong relationship between Danes and Jews is exemplified by the amazing story of the rescue of Danish Jews in 1943.
The Rebild July 4th Festival started in 1912 and has continued with pauses only for the two World Wars. A number of American presidents, members of the Danish monarchy, and prominent men and women from Denmark and the U.S. have attended and spoken at this unique celebration.
Founded in 1963 by entertainer Victor Borge and New York attorney Richard Netter, TTS is a non-profit scholarship organization dedicated to the living memory of the rescue of Jews during World War II and an institute of the American Jewish Committee.
