Thanks To Scandinavia Recognizes New Finnish Holocaust Remembrance Day

February 21, 2001 · Posted in TTS Programs · Comment

Thanks To Scandinavia recognizes with appreciation Finland’s recent decision to set aside a national day recalling the crimes committed during the Holocaust on January 27 the day of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Thanks To Scandinavia believes firmly that the importance of remembering the Holocaust and its lessons has not and will not diminish with time. Instead, we maintain that an understanding of where the slippery slope of evil and disrespect for human life leads is paramount to maintaining civilized communities.

Finland’s own wartime record with regard to its treatment of Jews is among the most exemplary in Europe. Finland, though a co-belligerent of Germany during the war and dependent upon the country for food and arms, adamantly refused repeated Nazi orders by Heinrich Himmler to deliver the Finnish Jewish community of approximately 2,000 for “Hitler’s Final Solution.” With the exception of the extradition of eight Jews for which Prime Minister Lipponen offered a public apology in November police did not cooperate with the Gestapo when action was sought by force. Nearly all of the country’s Jews were saved as a result.

Since 1963, Thanks To Scandinavia has been publicly remembering the heroic history of the rescue of Jews in Finland as well as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, by granting fellowships to the countries’ students for study in the United States and elsewhere. “These are days when it is important, even vital, that we express ourselves about the good deeds as well as the bad ones,” said TTS president Richard Netter.

Thanks To Scandinavia has published a book on the history of Finland and the Holocaust by Dr. Hannu Rautkallio that is distributed through the TTS office and at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. It is the most comprehensive book on the subject in the English language.
