Thanks To Scandinavia Mourns Co-Founder Victor Borge and Vouches to Keep His Vision Alive for Future Generations
Thanks To Scandinavia is profoundly saddened by the passing of its co-founder and National Chairman Victor Borge.
Escaping from Denmark in 1940 to freedom in the U.S. just ahead of the Nazi invasion, Mr. Borge continually showed vigorous appreciation for the opportunities provided by both his native country and his adopted land. As a centerpiece of those efforts Thanks To Scandinavia, a scholarship fund created in 1963 for Scandinavian students and doctors which stands as a perpetual American “thank you” to Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden for the protection and rescue heroically offered Scandinavian Jews and others during World War II.
Thanks To Scandinavia, now affiliated with the American Jewish Committee, is dedicated to keeping Mr. Borge’s vision alive. Through its annual distribution of over $250,000 in scholarships, Thanks To Scandinavia recalls the heroism and humanity of Scandinavians and forges bridges of understanding between the United States and Scandinavia.

Thanks To Scandinavia Expands Outreach to Thousands of Scholarship Recipients
Thanks To Scandinavia has launched a new website to encourage outreach to thousands of scholarship recipients. Founded in 1963, Thanks To Scandinavia awards scholarships each year currently amounting to $250,000 annually to Scandinavian students, teachers, and medical professionals in gratitude for the protection of Jews during the Second World War. In so doing, Thanks To Scandinavia has created a significant amount of goodwill between Scandinavia and the United States, Israel, and Jews worldwide.
The Thanks To Scandinavia website — www.thankstoscandinavia.org — contains historical background on the rescue of Jews in Scandinavian countries, information about TTS’s extensive program of scholarships, and pages intended to provide an opportunity for exchange of views and experiences.
As part of its effort to reach program alumni, Thanks To Scandinavia will be visiting Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden in January and hosting first-time reunions for Thanks To Scandinavia friends and scholarship recipients in cooperation with national affiliates and U.S. embassies. See Upcoming Events for more details on meeting time and locations.
